Firearm licensing, legislation and regulations
|
Registration and licensing of firearms in Australia is the responsibility of States and Territories – there is no national register of firearms.
The Australian Constitution does not give Australian citizens an explicit right to own or bear firearms. Following the 1996 Port Arthur massacre the Australasian Police Ministers' Council reached a Nationwide Agreement on Firearms (NAF) which committed the Federal and State and Territory governments to the registration of all firearms and the licensing of the owners of firearms.
States and Territories established a consistent system of firearms registration and firearm owner licensing requirements. This system is maintained by a Firearms Registry branch in each police jurisdiction.
The links below will take you to the relevant legislation and regulations for each State and Territory, and to the Firearms Registries.
