Tax assistance for small businesses in Tasmania



The ATO is inviting small business operators in Tasmania to attend free one-on-one information sessions to help them stay on track with their tax and superannuation obligations.

Security Industry Portable Leave Scheme Bill Introduced


The ACT Minister for Industrial Relations Dr Chris Bourke has introduced a Bill to create a new portable long service leave scheme for the security industry and its workers.

ACT - Security Industry Workplace Information Review


The ACT Security Industry Amendment Act 2010 expanded the suitability criteria and prerequisites for applicants for an employee licence to work in the security industry. The amendments introduced a requirement for security industry employees to attend a workplace rights information session delivered by a registered organisation (in this case United Voice).
A review of the requirement to attend a workplace rights information session is currently underway.

ACT Portable Long Service Leave Proposal


The ACT Government has advised ASIAL that it intends to introduce a portable long service leave scheme for workers in the ACT’s security industry (manpower sector).

As you may be aware the ACT has portable long service leave schemes for building and construction, community sector and contract cleaning industry, all managed by the ACT Long Service Leave Authority (the Authority).

The Government has sought ASIAL’s input on the proposal. A copy of the proposal is attached for your perusal.

TAS CONSUMER AFFAIRS & FAIR TRADING FACTS & INFORMATION GUIDE RELEASED


Consumer Affairs & Fair Trading have released a Facts & Information guide to the Security and Investigations Agents Act 2002. The information has been prepared as a layman’s guide to the law relating the security licensing in Tasmania incorporating the new requirements of the Amendment Act which will commence on 1 July 2011.

ASIAL STANDS UP FOR MEMBERS IN TASMANIA


In March of this year, the Office of Consumer Affairs & Fair Trading forwarded correspondence to security licence holders about proposed licence changes as part of COAG’s national harmonisation initiatives.
Following ASIAL’s representations Consumer Affairs has written this week to security licence holders advising existing licence holders that they will now have until they reapply in 2013 to complete the required training. Other concessions were communicated regarding recognition of prior learning (RPL) and firearms licence requirements.

ASIAL will continue to press for a common sense and cost effective approach in dealing with the re-training demands of Government.

IMPORTANT LICENSING CHANGES FOR TASMANIAN SECURITY PROVIDERS


The Tasmanian Department of Consumer Affairs and Fair Trading has announced significant changes to the Security and Investigations Agents Act 2002 that will take effect from 1 April 2011.

The changes support the Council of Australian Governments agreement to adopt a nationally consistent approach to the regulation of the private security industry.

The changes include the introduction of new licence classes and a temporary licence. Also of significance is the need for existing licence holders to undergo re-training by
31 December 2012.


Amendment to the

ACT Security Industry Act 2003


On the 24 August 2010, the ACT Legislative amendment passed the amendment to the Security Industry Act 2003. The amendments provide for the expansion of the current suitability criteria and pre-requisites for security employee applicants wishing to carry on a security activity as a body guard, or a crowd controller or a guard to patrol, watch or protect property.

There are a number of important new concepts that will be introduced in the ACT as a result of the liquor reforms that are relevant to the security industry.

TAS - Granting of Licences under the

Security and Investigations Agents Act 2002


The Department of Justice, Consumer Affairs and Fair Trading, has developed a Policy Document to guide the process of granting and not granting security licences.

The Commissioner intends to have the Policy Document certified by the Minister in terms of section 27 of the Magistrates Court (Administrative Appeals Division) Act 2001 for use by the Commissioner when there is an appeal against the Commissioner's decision not to grant a licence.
